It is reporters making phone calls, reading cuttings and knocking on doors, and the climax is a spreadsheet. It won best picture and best original screenplay, and won only those two from six nominations, which is unusual for a best picture winner. The reporting it depicts is real and the 2002 Boston Globe investigation won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. The team's work led to findings about hundreds of priests in Boston alone and to similar investigations worldwide. The real journalists were closely involved and several appear briefly. The final scenes list the places where similar patterns were later uncovered, and the list runs for a long time.
