Suikoden

On the data. An honest page for a franchise with almost no screen output. The only anime carrying this name predates the games. Suikoden Demon Century was released in 1993, two years before the first game, and takes the same source, the classical Chinese novel Water Margin, in a completely different direction: a post apocalyptic Tokyo. It is not an adaptation of anything Konami later made. A crowdfunded anime project has been running for several years with periodic updates and no release. The game series itself stopped in 2012 and Konami has done little with it since apart from a remaster of the first two games. The spiritual successor, made by much of the original team, arrived in 2024 under a different name. The second game's reputation is worth knowing about. It was printed in small numbers in English, went out of print immediately, and second hand copies reached extraordinary prices for two decades before the remaster. All the games share a premise borrowed from Water Margin: one hundred and eight characters you can recruit, most of whom are optional.
