Trails

On the data. Two things. The anime is not an adaptation. Northern War takes a character who appears briefly in the games and follows her through a conflict that the games treat as background. That means it neither retells a game's story nor stands on its own, and reviews reflected that: people who had played the games found it thin, and people who had not found it unexplained. The games are the most order dependent series of their kind. Trails has been running since 2004 and every game continues directly from the last, across four regional arcs, with characters carrying between them and events from twenty years of releases referenced casually. The community's standard advice is to start at the first game and accept that this is a commitment of hundreds of hours, and that advice is unusually firm. Several of the games went untranslated for years, which broke the chain for English speakers for a long time. That has largely been fixed. Nothing further has been animated.
