Where to start with The Black Phone

Two films in release order, and then one thing almost nobody knows is part of this at all. If you only want the films, watch them 2022 then 2025 and stop. The short story is worth reading first or not at all, because the film changes the ending.

  1. 1
The Black Phone (2022) The Black Phone

Start here. Set in 1978, it works completely on its own, and the whole franchise exists because of it.

  2. 2
    Black Phone 2 (2025) Black Phone 2

A direct sequel set four years later in 1982, built around Gwen rather than Finney. It assumes you remember exactly how the first one ends.

  3. 3
    Dreamkill (2023) Dreamkill

Last, even though it came out before Black Phone 2. It is a segment in the anthology V/H/S/85, it is set in 1985, and it is the only part of this story that happens after both films.

Then what? The short story collection can be read at any point, though it tells a different version of the first film's ending. There is no third film. Derrickson and his co-writer C. Robert Cargill said in October 2025 that they had no ideas for one and had used everything up.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
