Insidious

Five films in a genuinely consistent order, which for a horror series is the surprise.

Where to start with Insidious

Release order and story order both work here, which is rare, but they are not equally good. Two of the five are prequels built entirely on you already knowing how the first two end, so release order is the one to use.

  1. 1
    Insidious (2010) Insidious

A haunted-house film that turns out not to be about a house at all. It needs nothing before it, and every later film in the series is answering something it sets up.

  2. 2
    Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) Insidious: Chapter 2

Picks up minutes later and goes back through the first film to explain what you actually watched. Watching it before the first one would spoil the only thing that matters.

  3. 3
    Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) Insidious: Chapter 3

Steps back to 2007 and follows Elise instead of the Lamberts. It works this late because you already know where she ends up, which is what gives it its weight.

Then what? After that, The Last Key finishes the Elise pair and hands straight over to the first film, then The Red Door closes the family story nine years on. Out of the Further arrives on 21 August 2026 and is not out yet. If you ever go back for a second pass, the chronological order is 3, 4, 1, 2, 5.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

Sync & backup

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. To carry it to another device, move the code below.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in — good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.
