On the data. Three things. Watch the original with subtitles rather than dubbed. Half the cast speaks Swedish and half speaks Danish, and they understand each other without switching, which is how it actually works in that region. Any dub flattens that into one language and loses a layer of what the show is about. The remakes are the interesting part of this franchise. The format is a body on a border, and every country that has adapted it has chosen a border with its own problem: the Channel Tunnel, the Texas and Mexico line, the Russian and Estonian frontier, the Malaysia and Singapore causeway. The American version in particular becomes a very different and much angrier programme because of where it is set. They start from the same first case and then go their own ways. The lead character is written as neurodivergent without the show ever saying so or naming anything, which was unusual in 2011 and is a large part of why the series is remembered. Responses to that portrayal have been mixed and are worth reading about. The fourth season is the last and it was made as an ending rather than cancelled.
