The Howling

Eight films, and only the first two are a real sequel pair. The fourth is not a prequel, it is the first novel filmed again.

Where to start with The Howling

Watch the 1981 film, then the second if you want the only real sequel. After that the series is a shelf of unrelated films that happen to share a title.

  1. 1
    The Howling (1981) The Howling

Joe Dante, John Sayles on the script, and the transformation scene everybody remembers. It is the only entry in the series anyone needs to have seen.

  2. 2
Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf (1985) Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf

The only film that continues the first one, opening at the funeral of its heroine. It is also very silly, and Christopher Lee apologised for it, so go in expecting a different kind of film.

  3. 3
Howling IV: The Original Nightmare (1988) Howling IV: The Original Nightmare

Worth its own place because it is not a sequel at all. It films the same novel the 1981 film came from, more faithfully, so it works as an alternative version of the original rather than a continuation. The subtitle misleads people into expecting an origin story.

Then what? Howling III from 1987 is a standalone Australian film about marsupial werewolves. Films five and six are self contained one offs. New Moon Rising from 1995 loosely ties four, five and six together, so if you want that mini run, watch IV, V, VI and then New Moon Rising in that order, and know that New Moon Rising is mostly recycled footage. Reborn from 2011 connects to nothing.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
