The Invisible Man

On the data. One film, and a page that mostly exists to clear up what it is not. IT WAS NEVER A DARK UNIVERSE FILM. This is the single most common error about it. Universal did develop an Invisible Man with Johnny Depp as part of the shared monster universe it was building in 2016. That universe collapsed when The Mummy failed in 2017, and the project was restarted from nothing as a standalone film. Leigh Whannell has said plainly that it was never planned to be part of the Dark Universe. The Depp version is the real ghost of this page: it was cast and never made. IT IS NOT THE 1933 FILM AND NOT THE NOVEL. The H. G. Wells book and the James Whale film are the ancestors of the idea, not earlier chapters of this story. Neither is listed here. WOLF MAN IS NOT CONNECTED. The 2025 film has the same director, the same studio, the same producer and the same Universal Monsters banner, and shares no story, character or continuity with this one. It is not an entry here. THE PANDEMIC TURNED IT INTO A TEST CASE. It opened on 28 February 2020 and was on digital by 20 March, about three weeks later, which was close to unheard of at the time. That decision helped set the pattern every studio followed for the next two years. A SEQUEL IS BEING WRITTEN AND HAS NO DATE. Elisabeth Moss's company is developing it with Blumhouse and James Wan has shown interest. In October 2025 Moss said they still want one and are still working on it, and that the problem is getting the right script. Whether Whannell returns is reported differently in different places, so this page does not say. Nothing is dated, so nothing is listed. THE INVISIBLE WOMAN IS A DIFFERENT PROJECT. Elizabeth Banks was announced in 2019 to direct and star in a separate Universal film. In August 2024 she said it was no longer in active development, partly because Universal had prioritised the sequel to this one. It was never a spin-off of this film.
