True Grit

Two films of the same novel forty one years apart, and the second is not a remake of the first.

Where to start with True Grit

Either film, and the distinction that matters is this: the 2010 Coen brothers version is not a remake of the 1969 John Wayne version. Both go back to Charles Portis's 1968 novel independently, and the later one follows the book much more closely, including its ending and its narrator. So they are two readings of the same text rather than an original and a copy, and watching one does not spoil the other the way a remake would.

  1. 1
    True Grit (1969) True Grit

Henry Hathaway's version, and the one John Wayne won his only Oscar for. Warmer and funnier than the novel, with an ending the book does not have.

  2. 2
    True Grit (2010) True Grit

The Coen brothers, with Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld. Closer to Portis in language and much closer in how it ends.

  3. 3
    The novel (1968) True Grit

Short, funny and narrated by Mattie as an old woman, which is the thing the 1969 film drops and the 2010 film keeps.

Then what? Two follow-ups exist and neither is essential. Rooster Cogburn from 1975 is a straight sequel to the 1969 film, pairing Wayne with Katharine Hepburn, and has nothing to do with the novel. True Grit: A Further Adventure is a 1978 television film with Warren Oates taking the part.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
