On the data. A content warning first, because this is the honest thing to lead with. The premise of the first film is a kidnapping. A man abducts a woman, imprisons her, and tells her she has a year to fall in love with him, and the film treats this as romantic rather than as a crime. It drew sustained criticism on exactly that basis, including a petition asking Netflix to remove it, and the criticism is not a misreading of the film. It is also extremely explicit. Neither of those things is a reason nobody should watch it, but both are things people should know before pressing play. On structure: the second and third films were shot as one production and released four months apart in 2022, so the third is a continuation rather than a new story. The books came first and sold enormously in Poland. There are three of them, matching the three films, and the author later added a fourth. The films were the most watched non-English titles on Netflix in several countries in their release weeks, which is why all three exist despite reviews that were close to universally negative.
