Big Hero 6

On the data. Three things, and the first one has an odd origin. Big Hero 6 was a Marvel comic, created in 1998, about a Japanese superhero team. It ran for a handful of issues across two short series and was obscure even by Marvel standards. Disney had bought Marvel in 2009, and when the animation studio went looking for something it could take in any direction it liked, an almost unknown property was exactly what it wanted. The film keeps the name, the city concept and a few character names. Everything else is new. It won the Academy Award for animated feature, beating How to Train Your Dragon 2, which surprised a lot of people. It made over six hundred and fifty million dollars. The thing worth saying before you put it on with a child is that it opens with a death and it is about what grief does to the person left. The robot is funny and the film is not only funny. It handles it well, and it handles it directly. San Fransokyo, the setting, was built as a real city model: the studio generated a street layout, applied it to San Francisco's actual geography, and then redesigned the architecture as if Japanese builders had rebuilt the city after the 1906 earthquake. There is a stated reason inside the film for why it looks the way it does. The series ran three seasons on Disney Channel from 2017, following straight on from the film, and Baymax! is a set of six shorts made for Disney+ in 2022. Neither is required and both are after.
