Encanto

On the data. One film, and its life after release was bigger than its release. It opened in November 2021, when cinemas were running well below normal, and took about two hundred and fifty-six million dollars worldwide, which for a Disney musical is soft. Thirty days later it went to Disney+, and that is where it turned into a phenomenon. We Don't Talk About Bruno went to number one in America and in Britain and became the highest-charting song from a Disney animated film ever, beating Let It Go. It was not released as the single. Disney had chosen Surface Pressure and Dos Oruguitas to push, and the audience chose a seven-voice ensemble number in six-eight time about a family member nobody will name. The film is set in Colombia and the studio put a great deal of work into getting it right, with a research trip and a group of Colombian consultants on music, dress, food and plants. It is specific in a way Disney films about other countries have often not been. Underneath it is about generational trauma and about a family organised around not talking about something, which is why it hit adults as hard as children. It won the Academy Award for animated feature. Bob Iger said in 2025 that a sequel is in development. Nothing has been dated, so there is no upcoming title on this page.
