Mazinger and Getter Robo

On the data. Mazinger counts two hundred and sixty one broadcast episodes across its five television series plus ten on video, and Getter Robo one hundred and fifty three broadcast plus thirty on video. Only aired or released material is counted. Two things are worth stating plainly because they are the parts people get wrong. Grendizer was produced and sold as the third Mazinger series, aired in the same slot a week after Great Mazinger and carries Kouji Kabuto in a supporting role, but Go Nagai has said he does not consider it part of the Mazinger timeline and treats it as a side project. And the three crossover films, Great Mazinger vs. Getter Robo in 1975, its sequel later that year and the three-way Kessen! Daikaijuu in 1976, are explicitly canon to none of the series they draw on; the second one even stages Musashi's death differently from the way the television series did. Several counts are contested. Getter Robo G is thirty nine, not the forty three some databases carry, which comes from counting rebroadcasts. Change!! Getter Robo and Getter Robo Armageddon are one thirteen episode work under two titles and are frequently counted twice. Mazinkaiser is a video release rather than a television series and inflates television totals by seven when misfiled. Several Toei festival films run twenty five to thirty one minutes, about one episode, and counting them as features overstates the filmography. Finally, the manga and the anime diverge badly after 1976, and Getter Robo Arc is where that bites: it adapts the end of the manga line, ten years after material the anime never covered, from a manga Ken Ishikawa left unfinished when he died in 2006. Nothing in the anime leads to it.
