Where to start with Night at the Museum

Straight through in order. Release order and story order are identical and the films state their own gaps, which is rarer than it sounds.

  1. 1
Night at the Museum (2006) Night at the Museum

Larry Daley takes a night security job at the American Museum of Natural History and the exhibits get up. Nothing precedes it.

  2. 2
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Two years on, established in the film itself, with the story moving to Washington.

  3. 3
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014) Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb

Opens on a 1938 prologue in Egypt and then jumps seventy six years, which is also five years after the second film. It moves to the British Museum and ends the trilogy with the tablet left in London.

Then what? Kahmunrah Rises Again from 2022 is an animated continuation rather than a reboot: Larry appears, hands the night guard job to his teenage son Nick, and characters from the third film carry over. Every voice actor is new, including Larry's. It contradicts the third film in two visible ways, noted below. A live action reboot with all new characters was announced in July 2025 and has no cast and no date, so nothing is listed for it.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
