Ong Bak

On the data. The numbering is a lie and it is worth knowing before you start. Ong Bak 2 is not a sequel to Ong Bak. It is set in 1431, follows a completely different character, and has no narrative connection of any kind. The name was kept because the first film had sold. Ong Bak 3 is a genuine sequel to Ong Bak 2. So you have a standalone modern film and a two part period film, all under one title. The second film has a well documented production disaster behind it. Tony Jaa was directing for the first time, went over schedule and budget, and at one point disappeared from the production entirely. It was finished under pressure and it ends mid-story, which is why the third film exists. The first film's selling point was that nothing in it was faked: no wire work, no digital doubles, no speed changes. Several stunts are shown twice from different angles in the film itself to make the point. Tony Jaa's other Thai series, Tom-Yum-Goong, also called The Protector, is separate and not on this page.
