Where to start with Patlabor

There are two continuities and they split almost immediately. The films belong to the first one, so that is the route most people want.

  1. 1
Patlabor: The Early Days Patlabor: The Early Days

Seven episodes from 1988. This is the original and the films follow it. It is also very funny, which the films are not.

  2. 2
Patlabor: The Movie Patlabor: The Movie

1989. Oshii's first, and a sharp change of tone from what you have just watched. It assumes you know the cast.

  3. 3
Patlabor 2: The Movie Patlabor 2: The Movie

1993, and the reason people still talk about this series. It is a political thriller with a handful of action beats, and it is the best thing here by a distance.

Then what? The forty seven episode TV series is a separate retelling with a lighter tone, and The New Files belongs with it despite also being direct to video. WXIII, from 2002, is a third film that almost ignores the cast. The live action series and film are Oshii again in 2014 and 2015. A revival called EZY starts in 2026 and follows the TV continuity.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
