Where to start with Stranger Things

One long story told in five series, plus an animated one that fills in a gap rather than continuing anything. There is no puzzle to solve here — it is watched in the order it went out — so the only real decision is whether the cartoon is for you.

  1. 1
Stranger Things, series 1 Stranger Things

Eight episodes and a self-contained story with a proper ending, so it is a low-commitment way to find out whether the whole thing is for you. Nothing before it.

  2. 2
Tales from '85, series 1 Stranger Things: Tales from '85

Animated, set between the second and third series, and made to sit in that gap rather than to move the plot on. Entirely optional, and best once you already care about these characters.

Then what? After that the remaining four series run straight on in order, ending with the fifth in 2025. The animated series can go in its proper place between series two and three on a rewatch, but on a first pass it is easier to keep the main run unbroken and come back to it.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

Sync & backup

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. To carry it to another device, move the code below.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in — good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.
