On the data. This is the textbook case of publication order and chronological order fighting, and both orders are real. Publication order starts in 1942, with the Foundation stories Asimov wrote for Astounding Science-Fiction through to 1950, gathered as Foundation (1951), Foundation and Empire (1952) and Second Foundation (1953). Chronological order starts with I, Robot, a 1950 fixup of nine robot stories bolted together by a frame interview, because in the 1980s Asimov joined three separate series he had written decades apart into a single history: Robots and Empire (1985) attaches the robot novels to the Empire novels, Foundation's Edge (1982) and Foundation and Earth (1986) attach the Foundation books back to the robots, and the two prequels, Prelude to Foundation (1988) and Forward the Foundation (1993), fill in Hari Seldon's life. Asimov printed his own suggested order in the Author's Note to Prelude to Foundation. Goodreads maintains two separate series entries for the same fifteen books, one publication and one chronological, which is why a search for the reading order returns two confident and opposite answers. The story-order view on this page is the chronological one, and a first-time reader should probably not use it. Three reasons. The original trilogy works as a series of puzzles whose answers the prequels give away in advance, and the Mule in particular only works if you do not already know what psychohistory is for. The robot novels are detective stories with a slow, domestic register that is nothing like the Foundation books, so starting there gives a misleading idea of what the series is. And Foundation and Earth, the last book in story time, ends on a reveal that assumes you have read the robot novels, which chronological order handles by putting them first and thereby defusing it. Publication order preserves the shape Asimov actually wrote. Chronological order is the better second pass. One place the site departs from Asimov's own printed list. He put The Currents of Space (1952) at position six and The Stars, Like Dust (1951) at position seven. The books themselves put The Stars, Like Dust earlier, while Trantor is still expanding rather than ruling, and most fan chronologies since have reversed Asimov's pair. The story order here uses The Stars, Like Dust, then The Currents of Space, then Pebble in the Sky. It is a genuine disagreement and the two books barely touch each other, so the choice changes nothing except the number next to them. Positions for the robot short fiction are loose in the same way: the stories in I, Robot and The Complete Robot span roughly two centuries and cannot sit at a single point. The Positronic Man is placed in the robot era by convention rather than by anything the text fixes. The Apple TV+ series departs from the books further than almost any adaptation of comparable profile, and it is more useful to treat it as a separate story that borrows the premise. The books are a sequence of short stories set centuries apart with an almost entirely new cast each time and hardly any recurring characters; the series keeps a continuous cast across those centuries using cryogenic sleep, cloning and a digital copy of Hari Seldon, because a television series cannot replace its leads every two episodes. The Galactic Emperor of the books is a background figure; the series replaces him with a genetic dynasty of three simultaneous Cleon clones called Brother Dawn, Brother Day and Brother Dusk, who are an invention of the show and take up roughly half its running time. Demerzel, a minor late-period character in the novels, becomes a central robot with a several-thousand-year history. Gaal Dornick, a young man who appears in the first chapters of Foundation and then leaves, becomes a woman, a psychic, and the lead of the series. Salvor Hardin is likewise recast and given a family relationship to Gaal that has no counterpart in print. The third season, which ran from 11 July to 12 September 2025, brings in the Mule, and does so on its own terms. Seasons one, two and three each ran ten episodes. Apple renewed the show for a fourth season in September 2025, with Ian Goldberg and David Kob taking over as showrunners from David S. Goyer, who remains an executive producer; filming began in Prague in January 2026 and no premiere date or episode count has been announced, so season four is listed with a count of zero. The two films are not part of the series and not part of each other. Bicentennial Man (1999) adapts the 1976 novella and its novel expansion The Positronic Man, and is reasonably faithful to it. I, Robot (2004) began as an unrelated screenplay called Hardwired and had Asimov's title, the Three Laws and the name Susan Calvin fitted to it afterwards, so it shares almost nothing with the 1950 book beyond the premise that robot laws can be gamed. A 1964 BBC television production of The Caves of Steel with Peter Cushing was broadcast and is not in general circulation; it is not listed. Nightfall, often filmed, is a standalone story and belongs to no part of this timeline. The Second Foundation trilogy by Gregory Benford, Greg Bear and David Brin was authorised by Asimov's estate in the late 1990s and slots into the Seldon prequel era. It is not required and opinions on it are divided; it is here because it is the only licensed continuation of the novels. Short story collections beyond I, Robot and The Complete Robot, including The Rest of the Robots, Robot Dreams and Robot Visions, overlap heavily with each other and are not listed separately.
