On the data. Three hundred and sixty four episodes across four series, plus three films. Counts: SG-1 has 214 episodes because Children of the Gods, the two hour pilot, is counted as two; listings that count it as one give 213 and a first season of 21. There is also a 2009 re-edit, Children of the Gods: Final Cut, which is a single feature length version with new effects and a new score, and it is not listed separately because it is a different cut of the same episodes. Atlantis is a flat 100 and Universe a flat 40. THE 1994 FILM. It is the same story despite the contradictions, and the contradictions are worth knowing before they annoy you. The film calls Ra the last survivor of his species; SG-1 makes the Goa'uld a whole species with dozens of System Lords. The film puts Abydos in another galaxy; the series moves it a short hop inside the Milky Way. The film's colonel is spelled O'Neil and is a man planning to die on the mission; the series spells him O'Neill and plays him for jokes. Everybody is recast, most notably Kurt Russell and James Spader. The film treats the gate as a single buried artefact; the series builds a galaxy wide network of them and a dialling computer to match. None of that stops SG-1 opening by returning to Abydos for the characters the film left there and treating the film's events as history. The honest reason for the mismatch is that Emmerich and Devlin never regarded the series as their sequel, spent years trying to make their own follow up trilogy instead, and had no involvement in what MGM built. ATLANTIS IN PARALLEL. SG-1's eighth season began on 9 July 2004 and Atlantis's first a week later, and they ran in the same weeks for three years: SG-1 8 with Atlantis 1, SG-1 9 with Atlantis 2, SG-1 10 with Atlantis 3. Atlantis's premiere follows directly from SG-1's Lost City and New Order, so the one thing to get right is to watch SG-1's two part season 8 opener before starting Atlantis. After that the crossings are occasional rather than weekly, so alternating in blocks is enough and nobody needs an episode by episode chart. Worth knowing that SG-1 season 9 is a soft relaunch with a new team leader and the Ori as a new enemy, which is why some people are told to start there; it is a worse starting point than it looks, because the Goa'uld story it is reacting to takes eight seasons to build. THE TWO DVD FILMS. The Ark of Truth resolves the Ori story that SG-1's tenth season deliberately left open, and Continuum follows it. Both were made after SG-1 ended and both are set after its final season, which places them inside the run of Atlantis seasons 4 and 5 rather than after Atlantis: a common and defensible placement is The Ark of Truth straight after SG-1's finale and Continuum after Atlantis's fifth season premiere. Both come before Universe. Whether they are films or specials is genuinely contested: they were shot as feature length standalone releases and sold as films on disc, but they are SG-1 productions and some catalogues file them as episodes or specials of the series. This site counts them as films, because that is how they were made, released and sold. ORIGINS AND WHAT IS LEFT OUT. Stargate Origins is ten episodes of roughly ten minutes made for MGM's own subscription service in 2018 and re-cut as a 104 minute film, Stargate Origins: Catherine. It is set in 1939, which is why it sorts first in story order, and MGM published it as part of the franchise, but none of the original producers were involved and it sits badly with SG-1, which presents a 1945 experiment as the first time anyone went through the gate. It is listed and flagged rather than quietly dropped. Stargate Infinity, the 2002 animated series, is not here: it is set decades later, was made outside the production team, and is not part of this story. The 34 Universe KINO shorts and the various web extras are not listed. Universe was cancelled in 2011 with its story unfinished, and a new series from Martin Gero was ordered by Amazon MGM in late 2025 and cancelled in June 2026 before filming, so there is nothing forthcoming.
