Halo

On the data. The single most useful fact about Halo on screen is that it is not one line. The Paramount+ series, two seasons from 2022 and 2024, is set in what its own producers call the Silver Timeline, named after Silver Team and the silver screen. It was a deliberate decision by 343 Industries and Amblin to depart from the games' canon so the show could rework characters and events freely, and the result is not a loose adaptation but a declared separate continuity. Master Chief's face, Cortana's role, Makee, Kwan Ha and the fall of Reach itself all differ, and none of it is meant to slot in beside the novels. Everything else on screen was made inside the games' canon: Halo Legends in 2010, an animated anthology whose seven stories sit at scattered points across a hundred thousand years; Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn in 2012, five short live action episodes whose main narrative is set in 2526 with a framing sequence years later; Halo: Nightfall in 2014, five parts set around 2556; and the animated Halo: The Fall of Reach in 2015, which adapts the first novel and was released with Halo 5. Those four fit the books. The Paramount+ series does not, which is why it sits in its own group here with no story position at all. Season one ran nine episodes from 24 March to 19 May 2022 and season two ran eight from 8 February to 21 March 2024. Paramount+ cancelled it on 18 July 2024. The producers have looked for another home, and the show later turned up streaming on Netflix from October 2025, but that is a licensing move rather than a renewal: no third season has been ordered. The prose side is around forty titles by roughly a dozen authors, and it does not run as one queue either. The original novels, written alongside the first games between 2001 and 2008, are the spine. Greg Bear's Forerunner Saga, three books from 2011 to 2013, goes back about a hundred thousand years to the civilisation that built the rings, and is the most self contained and the most divisive stretch in the series; readers either rate it the best writing in Halo or bounce off it entirely. Karen Traviss's Kilo-Five trilogy, 2011 to 2014, runs in parallel with the immediate post war period from a covert operations angle, and is the other contested block, largely for how it treats the Spartan-II programme and the people who ran it. From 2014 onwards the line fragments into small team stories: Troy Denning writing Master Chief and Blue Team, and separately the Ferrets; Kelly Gay writing the salvager Rion Forge; Matt Forbeck writing Buck's squad; Tobias Buckell writing Gray Team; Cassandra Rose Clarke writing two books aimed at younger readers. Following one author's thread is a far better experience than reading everything in order. On story order: the positions used here reproduce the chronological order that the published Halo reading guides agree on, not exact in universe dates. Several novels overlap in time, a few span decades, and Halo's own official book guide sorts by team rather than by date and tells first time readers to start with The Fall of Reach and go by publication. Where a novel covers a long span it is placed at its earliest major events, which is why The Fall of Reach sits before The Flood even though both end in 2552. Treat the ordering as reliable and the precision as approximate. Sources disagree on a few dates and this site picks one in each case: Smoke and Shadow is listed as 2016, following its 28 November 2016 release, though several guides say 2015; Evolutions is listed as 2009, from its 24 November 2009 publication, though some lists say 2010; Shadow of Intent is listed as 2015, its digital release, though print editions carry 2016. Halo: Parasite's Wake by Tim Lebbon is set during the first game and was pushed from September to 20 October 2026, so it is flagged as unreleased. What is deliberately not here: the games, which are the actual centre of the franchise and are not a watch order problem; the comics, including Uprising, Escalation, Blood Line, Initiation, Collateral Damage, Lone Wolf, Rise of Atriox and the graphic novel adaptations, which are a separate and much messier list; the reference and art books such as the Halo Encyclopedia and The Essential Visual Guide, which are not story; and Halo: Landfall, three short live action films directed by Neill Blomkamp in 2007, which were advertising for Halo 3 and run about seven minutes in total. Halo: Waypoint Chronicles: Volume One, published 26 May 2026, is listed because it collects more than thirty short stories that were previously online only, but like the other anthologies it sits across the whole timeline rather than at one point in it, so it carries no story position. A second volume has been mentioned but not dated.
