Super Mario

Four decades of adaptations with nothing in common, and one modern pair that actually connects.

Where to start with Super Mario

Start with the modern films, because they are the only two that follow one another. Everything before 2023 is a separate attempt with no connection to any other.

  1. 1
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Illumination's film, and the first Mario adaptation that is both good and widely seen. Nothing precedes it.

  2. 2
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

A direct sequel from the same directors, released on 1 April 2026. It assumes the first film and nothing else.

Then what? Everything older stands alone. The three DIC cartoons from 1989, 1990 and 1991 share a production company, a cast and a world, which is the closest thing to continuity the older material has, so watch them in that order if you watch them at all. The 1993 live action film is entirely on its own. The 1986 Japanese anime was never released outside Japan and is unconnected to any of it. A further Illumination film is scheduled for April 2028 and another for 2029; neither is listed, because neither exists yet.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
