Where to start with The Little Mermaid

Release order and story order come apart twice here, and both times the later thing is set earlier. Two of the four animated entries happen before the 1989 film.

  1. 1
The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning (2008) The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning

The earliest point in the story, about a year before the film. It explains why Triton is the way he is: Ariel's mother is killed and he bans music. Made last, set first.

  2. 2
The Little Mermaid, the series (1992 to 1994) The Little Mermaid

Thirty-one episodes, and they are set before the film too, with Ariel still a mermaid and still curious. Episodic, so any order within it works.

  3. 3
The Little Mermaid (1989) The Little Mermaid

The film everything else is arranged around.

  4. 4
The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000) The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea

The only thing set afterwards. Years later, with Ariel and Eric's daughter. Watch it last of the four.

  5. 5
The Little Mermaid (2023) The Little Mermaid

Separate continuity, and it differs from the 1989 film in ways that matter rather than only in casting.

Then what? The 2019 live special is a stage performance over old footage. Ariel, from 2024, is a preschool series in a continuity of its own and does not replace Ariel's Beginning.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
