Where to start with Ultraman: the New Generation

Almost every series here is its own world, so you can start almost anywhere, and the one thing you should not do is start at the beginning. Ultraman Ginga is first by date and is the worst introduction to the era: eleven episodes in a split run, made under real budget constraints.

  1. 1
    Ultraman Z Ultraman Z

The best regarded entry of the run, twenty five episodes, and fully comprehensible with no prior knowledge. Its one connection to anything else, an antagonist carried over from Orb, works as a bonus rather than a barrier.

  2. 2
Ultraman Teo, if you want to watch along Ultraman Teo

The sixtieth anniversary series, airing weekly right now with a free legal English subtitled release worldwide on the official channel. No backlog, no cost, no continuity to catch up on. The only downside is that it is unfinished.

  3. 3
Ultraman X, if you want something short and complete Ultraman X

Twenty two episodes, standalone, light, and the shortest finished series in the era.

  4. 4
Ultraman Blazar, if you are sceptical of the format Ultraman Blazar

Deliberately built as the harder science fiction entry. Its hero is not from Nebula M78 at all, which cuts the show loose from the wider mythology, and its director has compared it to Gaia and Nexus rather than to the rest of this run.

Then what? Only two pairs must be watched in order. Ginga into Ginga S is one story with the same lead, two years apart. Trigger into Decker is the other, about ten years apart in-story, and Trigger's real ending is the film Episode Z, which sits between them, while Decker's real ending is its own film. Two looser links are worth knowing: Geed follows on from a miniseries that spun out of Orb, so Orb first pays off, and Z hides Orb's antagonist in plain sight as a supporting character, so Orb first turns a reveal into a punch. Everything else can be watched in any order or skipped.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

Sync & backup

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. To carry it to another device, move the code below.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in — good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.
