Where to start with Universal Soldier

Watch the 1992 film. Then pick a branch, because after that there are three of them and they contradict each other. The best one is not the one the numbers point at.

  1. 1
    Universal Soldier (1992) Universal Soldier

The root of all three continuities and the only entry that every later film accepts. Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, directed by Roland Emmerich.

  2. 2
Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009) Universal Soldier: Regeneration

Go here next. It skips the two television films and The Return entirely, brings both original stars back, and is by a distance the best sequel. Straight to video, and it does not look it.

  3. 3
Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012) Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning

Follows straight on from Regeneration and finishes the story. Be warned it is barely an action film: slow, bleak and much closer to horror, with Scott Adkins leading and Van Damme reduced to a few scenes.

Then what? The other two branches are optional and neither leads anywhere. Universal Soldier II and III are 1998 cable films with everyone recast, made as a pilot for a series that was never ordered, and no later film admits they happened. The Return from 1999 is a cinema sequel to the 1992 film that ignores those two, and Regeneration then ignores it in turn. Following the numbers II and III takes you straight into the branch nothing else acknowledges.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
