Where to start with A Better Tomorrow

Watch the 1986 film and then the sequel. The third one is a prequel, so save it for last even though it explains the beginning.

  1. 1
    A Better Tomorrow (1986) A Better Tomorrow

The one that changed Hong Kong cinema and made Chow Yun-fat a star. Everything else here exists because of it, including two foreign remakes.

  2. 2
A Better Tomorrow II (1987) A Better Tomorrow II

Follows on directly. Be ready for the twin brother, which is how the film brings back a character who definitively died in the first one.

  3. 3
A Better Tomorrow III: Love & Death in Saigon (1989) A Better Tomorrow III: Love & Death in Saigon

A prequel set in Vietnam, and the only one Tsui Hark directed rather than John Woo. Watch it last: it explains the first film's character and it is a very different piece of work, so it lands better once you know the two it precedes.

Then what? The 2010 Korean film and the 2018 Chinese film are licensed remakes of the 1986 original and neither has a sequel, so they stand alone. Return to a Better Tomorrow from 1994 is not part of this at all, despite the title.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
