On the data. Two hundred and fifty four episodes across two shows, a hundred and forty four of Buffy and a hundred and ten of Angel. Every count is settled except Buffy's first season, which this site gives as twelve. Some listings show eleven, because Welcome to the Hellmouth and The Harvest were broadcast back to back as a two hour premiere and get collapsed into one entry; a few show thirteen by adding the unaired half hour pilot presentation Whedon made to sell the series, which never aired, has never been released and is not part of the story. Twelve aired episodes is the figure that reconciles with the series total of a hundred and forty four. THE INTERLEAVE. Angel begins where Buffy's third season ends: Angel leaves Sunnydale in Graduation Day Part Two and the spin-off's first episode, City Of, picks him up in Los Angeles shortly after. For two full years both shows ran on The WB on the same night, Buffy at eight and Angel at nine, twenty two episodes each, so for Buffy season 4 with Angel season 1, and Buffy season 5 with Angel season 2, the rule is simply: Buffy 4x01, Angel 1x01, Buffy 4x02, Angel 1x02, and so on to the end. Episode number matches episode number and Buffy always goes first on the night. The points where it matters. Buffy 4x03 The Harsh Light of Day into Angel 1x03 In the Dark: Spike digs up the Gem of Amara in Sunnydale, Oz carries the ring to Los Angeles in the Angel episode and Spike follows it there. Buffy 4x08 Pangs into Angel 1x08 I Will Remember You: Angel spends the whole of Pangs in Sunnydale without Buffy seeing him, and I Will Remember You opens moments later with Buffy arriving in Los Angeles to have it out with him. Reversed, it is nonsense. Buffy 4x15 This Year's Girl and 4x16 Who Are You, then Angel 1x18 Five by Five and 1x19 Sanctuary: Faith wakes from her coma, swaps bodies with Buffy and runs to Los Angeles, the two Angel episodes are her story there, Buffy turns up in person in Sanctuary, and Angel then comes to Sunnydale to apologise in Buffy 4x20 The Yoko Factor. Air order puts these in a workable sequence, though watching the two Angel episodes straight after Who Are You rather than three Buffy episodes later reads better. Buffy 5x07 Fool for Love and Angel's Darla, broadcast the same night, are a designed pair: the same flashbacks from two points of view, Spike's on one show and Angelus, Darla and Drusilla's on the other. Watch them back to back. Angel comes to Sunnydale after Joyce's funeral in Forever, the episode straight after The Body. Buffy 5x22 The Gift kills Buffy, and Angel's second season finale, There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb, aired the same night and ends with Angel being told. WHERE IT GOES OUT OF SYNC. Buffy moved to UPN for its sixth season while Angel stayed on The WB, and the two networks would not let the casts appear on each other's air. The WB's entertainment president said at the time that there would be no crossovers and that Angel should establish itself as its own world. From then on every meeting happens off screen. The timing still holds together in that year: Angel's third season premiered on 24 September 2001 on Mondays, Buffy's sixth premiered about a week later on UPN Tuesdays but opened with a two hour episode counted as two, so the numbers stay roughly level and one to one pairing still works. The sequence to preserve is Angel 3x04 Carpe Noctem, which ends with Willow arriving in Los Angeles to tell Angel that Buffy is alive, then Buffy 6x04 Flooded, where Buffy takes his call and leaves to meet him, then Angel 3x05 Fredless and Buffy 6x05 Life Serial, which both open on the aftermath of a meeting neither network would let them film. The pairing genuinely breaks in the last year. Buffy season 7 started on 24 September 2002 on UPN Tuesdays. Angel season 4 started on 6 October 2002 on The WB Sundays, moved to Wednesdays part way through, took a long break from November to January and finished on 7 May 2003, thirteen days before Buffy ended on 20 May. Angel is roughly two episodes behind at the start of that year and two ahead at the end, so matching numbers is wrong and only air order works. The hard constraint is Angel 4x13 Salvage, 4x14 Release and 4x15 Orpheus, the last of which aired on 19 March 2003: Wesley breaks Faith out of prison, Willow arrives from Sunnydale to restore Angel's soul, and Faith and Willow leave for Sunnydale at the end of it, arriving in Buffy 7x18 Dirty Girls. Angel's fifth season premiered in October 2003, four months after Buffy finished, and Spike, who dies in Buffy's finale, turns up at the end of its first episode. WHAT IS NOT HERE. The 1992 film with Kristy Swanson is a separate telling of the same premise by the same writer, disowned by him and contradicted by the series, so it is not part of this. The Dark Horse and Boom comics that continue both shows as further seasons are a different medium with their own continuity arguments and are left out. A sequel series with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning got as far as a Hulu pilot before being dropped in March 2026, so there is nothing forthcoming to list.
