They have different casts, different creative teams, a different era setting and different approaches to the source, and the 2022 series is a from scratch reboot rather than a continuation of the film. Two production companies appear on both, which is shared producers rather than shared story. The 2014 film adapts the first book, was released in February 2014, and took 15.4 million dollars worldwide against a 30 million budget. A sequel adapting Frostbite was then attempted independently, with a screenwriter hired and a crowdfunding campaign launched; the campaign missed its goal and the project was cancelled, so no studio funded sequel was ever mounted. It is also the reason the film carries two names: it was released in many markets, and during early United States marketing, as Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters, which is why it turns up under two titles across databases. The 2022 Peacock series is one season of ten episodes, verified from three sources including Peacock's own show page, premiering on 15 September 2022 with the first four episodes at once and running weekly to a finale on 27 October. It was created by Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre, set in 1997, and rather than adapting any single novel it draws elements from across all six and tells a different story with reimagined characters. It holds 77 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 59 on Metacritic. It was cancelled by Peacock on 20 January 2023. Plec shopped it elsewhere, and that ended when she confirmed publicly on 23 April 2023 that the cast's contracts had expired and the actors were free to take other work. No revival has followed and none is announced. On the books, there have been no new Vampire Academy or Bloodlines novels since The Ruby Circle in 2015, confirmed against three live sources. Richelle Mead moved on to other series. One caveat on that: her official site appears not to have been substantively updated since around 2015 and still describes a 2016 book as forthcoming, so its silence is weak evidence on its own, and the bibliographies are what carry the claim. The exact in-universe gap between the end of Last Sacrifice and the opening of Bloodlines is commonly described as a few months, but no reliable source gives a figure, so this page says shortly after rather than naming one. Where the 2014 film's distribution rights sit today is also unclear, since The Weinstein Company's library was sold after its collapse and the specific title could not be traced.
