The Empyrean

Four books in three years, and the first one is not called The Empyrean.

Where to start with The Empyrean

Fourth Wing first, and the reason to say so is the naming. The series is called The Empyrean and no book carries that title, so people search for it, find nothing, and assume they have the wrong name. Start with Fourth Wing and read them in publication order, which is also story order.

  1. 1
    Fourth Wing (2023) Fourth Wing

Violet Sorrengail is forced into a war college where cadets bond with dragons or die trying. The one everybody means when they talk about this series.

  2. 2
    Iron Flame (2023) Iron Flame

Published the same year, six months later. It continues directly and assumes you remember everything.

  3. 3
    Onyx Storm (2025) Onyx Storm

The third, after a longer gap. It broke first-week sales records for a novel of its kind.

Then what? Threshing Day, the fourth, was published on 29 September 2026. Six graphic novel adaptations of the first three books are planned. A television series was greenlit at Amazon Prime Video in May 2026, with Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya cast as Violet and Xaden in October 2026; it has no date and nothing has been released.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
