Release order works for the first six, then stops working, because the seventh film is not a sequel to the sixth and the eighth reaches back past the seventh as though it never happened.

The best-liked sequel, it brings Nancy back, and it sets up two things the 2003 crossover runs on. If you skip a sequel, do not skip this one.

Then what? Fill in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth films in order, and watch New Nightmare after the sixth rather than in release position. Then Freddy vs. Jason, which continues Freddy's Dead directly and ignores New Nightmare entirely. The 2010 remake is one film that connects to nothing. Freddy's Nightmares is an anthology, optional, and best after the fourth film.
