A trilogy, a spin-off, and a 1960 film that is the source rather than the first chapter.
Two different things share this name, and that is the whole confusion. The 1960 film is what the 2001 film remakes, not an earlier chapter of the same story, and no character or plot carries between them.

A spin-off following Danny's sister with a new crew, and it works on its own. It leans on the trilogy for one running joke about whether Danny is actually dead.
Then what? Ocean's Thirteen goes between Twelve and Eight and brings the story back to Las Vegas and to the villain of the first film. Watch the 1960 original whenever you like, or not at all; it is the source, not the start. A prequel set in 1962 is dated 25 June 2027.
