Where to start with Once Upon a Time in China

In order, which is also roughly chronological, because the films track a real man's life against real late Qing history. Each is self-contained and none ends on a cliffhanger, so the order matters less than it looks.

  1. 1
Once Upon a Time in China (1991) Once Upon a Time in China

Foshan in the late nineteenth century, foreign powers carving up the coast, and a martial arts master turning his school into a militia. Nothing precedes it.

  2. 2
Once Upon a Time in China II (1992) Once Upon a Time in China II

Set in 1895, with the White Lotus Sect and a young Sun Yat-sen. Generally held to be the best of the six.

  3. 3
Once Upon a Time in China III (1993) Once Upon a Time in China III

Beijing, the Empress Dowager and a lion dance competition. The last of the three Tsui Hark and Jet Li made together.

Then what? Films four and five recast Wong with Vincent Zhao; Tsui Hark produced both and directed the fifth. Four also swaps 13th Aunt for a 14th Aunt, which is the single most confusing thing in the series, and Rosamund Kwan returns for five. Once Upon a Time in China and America from 1997 brings Jet Li back with Sammo Hung directing, and is the sendoff. The television series from 1995, twenty episodes in five four-part stories, has Vincent Zhao again and Tsui Hark producing, and sits alongside films four and five.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
