The Princess Diaries

Two films, eleven numbered novels that stop agreeing with them after the first one, and a third film in development since 2024 with no date and no Julie Andrews.

Where to start with The Princess Diaries

Both films in order, and that is the whole of the watch order. The thing to know before you start is that the books are not a longer version of the films. The first film adapts the first book loosely; the second adapts nothing at all. If you read on after the first film you are reading a different story, not the next part of this one.

  1. 1
The Princess Diaries, 2001 The Princess Diaries

The premise and the only one that adapts a book. It stands alone and most people stop here.

  2. 2
Royal Engagement, 2004 The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

Five years later in the story, with the same cast. It is an original screenplay rather than an adaptation, so nothing you have read prepares you for it and nothing in it matches what the books do next.

  3. 3
The novels, if you want more of Mia The Princess Diaries novels

Eleven numbered volumes going well into her adult life, plus a 2023 one. They diverge from the films completely after the first book, so treat them as the other version rather than as a continuation.

Then what? A third film has been in development since October 2024 with Adele Lim directing and Anne Hathaway back as star and producer. It has never been dated and filming has never started, so it is on this page as not out rather than as something to wait for on a particular day.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
