On the data. Three things, and the first one has one of the best-documented production stories in animation. The film began in 1994 as Kingdom of the Sun, an Incan epic in the shape of The Prince and the Pauper, directed by Roger Allers straight off The Lion King, with songs by Sting. It was in production for years. By 1998 it was not working, Disney gave the team a deadline it could not meet, Allers left, and Mark Dindal rebuilt the film as a buddy comedy with almost none of the original material. Sting's songs went, apart from two. All of that was being filmed at the time. Sting's wife, the producer Trudie Styler, had been given access to make a documentary about how a Disney film gets made, and what she ended up with was a record of one collapsing. The documentary is called The Sweatbox. It was shown once at a film festival in 2002 and Disney has never released it. The film that came out of it made a modest profit, got middling reviews, and has since become one of the most quoted Disney films of its era, almost entirely on the strength of its dialogue and of Kronk, who was a minor character in the original design. After that it goes the usual way: a direct-to-video sequel in 2005 that follows Kronk, and a Disney Channel series that ran for two seasons. Both are after the film and neither is required.
