The Shining

A film the author hated, a miniseries he made to correct it, and a sequel that had to satisfy both.

Where to start with The Shining

Watch the Kubrick film. Everything else is optional and the order afterwards depends on what you want: the 1997 miniseries if you want the book, Doctor Sleep if you want the story continued. The thing worth knowing is that the film and the novel end differently, in ways that matter, and Doctor Sleep is a sequel to a novel that contradicts the film it has to look like.

  1. 1
    The Shining (1980) The Shining

Kubrick's. Still the one, whatever its author thinks of it.

  2. 2
    Doctor Sleep (2019) Doctor Sleep

Forty years later with Danny grown up. It works as a film on its own and is much better than its reception suggested.

  3. 3
    The Shining (1997) The Shining

Only if you want Stephen King's version. Three parts, made for television, faithful to the book and much weaker as television.

Then what? Room 237 is a documentary about theories people have about the 1980 film. It is entertaining and should not be mistaken for information.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below: tick anything off in either place.

Everything you tick is saved in this browser and nowhere else. An account is the only way to put your list on another device, and the only way to get it back if this browser clears its storage. It is free and it takes an email address and a password.

Sign in on your phone, your laptop, anything, and the same list is there, kept in step as you tick. Nothing to copy, nothing to remember.

All three are about this franchise and all three are for showing, not moving. The link and the picture open SagaList with that progress displayed next to whatever the person opening it has already ticked. The code is what a friend pastes into Compare below. None of them writes anything into anybody's list.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.

Removes everything ticked here, in this browser. If you are signed in it clears on your other devices too. If you are not, there is no other copy and this cannot be undone.
