The Wandering Earth

On the data. Two films so far, and the order question is the same one Infernal Affairs raises: the prequel came second and should be watched second. The second film is set in the decades before the first, covering the argument about whether to move the planet at all, and it introduces an artificial intelligence whose role in the first film reads differently once you have seen it. Watching it first removes that. The source is a novella by Liu Cixin, who also wrote The Three-Body Problem. It is around thirty pages and the films keep its central image and very little else. It is worth reading, and it is bleaker than either film. On the premise: the physics does not work. Fitting engines to the Earth and flying it to another star is not something the numbers support, and the films are not trying to be rigorous about it. Enjoying them requires accepting the image rather than the arithmetic. A third film has been announced for 2027. Nothing is listed here for it beyond that.
