X

On the data. Three films in three years, and the making of them is part of the interest. Pearl was shot in secret immediately after X, on the same sets in New Zealand, with the same crew, during the pandemic. Nobody outside the production knew it existed until a teaser appeared at the end of X in cinemas. That is why two films with a sixty year gap between their settings arrived six months apart. The order should be release order. X establishes that Mia Goth is playing both the young woman and the elderly one, under heavy prosthetics, and Pearl only lands the way it does once you know where that character ends up. The three films are also three different genres wearing horror. X is a 1970s grindhouse slasher. Pearl is a Technicolor melodrama in the style of a 1950s studio picture, complete with a long single take monologue that runs about eight minutes. MaXXXine is an eighties Los Angeles thriller. Ti West has said the trilogy is finished. Nothing further has been announced.
