Cloverfield

On the data. The short version: this is an anthology that was assembled rather than planned, and calling it a trilogy oversells how much the three films have to do with each other. Cloverfield, released in January 2008, is found footage of a monster attack on Manhattan on the night of 22 May 2008, and it was conceived, written and shot as its own thing. 10 Cloverfield Lane began life as a spec script called The Cellar by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken, a single location thriller about three people in a bunker; Bad Robot picked it up and it was reworked into what J. J. Abrams has described as a blood relative rather than a sequel, with no character, no location and no plot thread carried over from the first film. The Cloverfield Paradox began as a spec script called God Particle by Oren Uziel, bought by Paramount and Bad Robot in 2012 with no Cloverfield element in it at all, and scenes were rewritten during production to tie it in. Paramount then sold it to Netflix, which announced it during Super Bowl LII in February 2018 and released it the same night, which is the reason a lot of people saw it before they saw the second film. On order, the three films sit in the same sequence whether you go by release date or by calendar. The first is set in May 2008, the second is set at an unstated point that is generally read as contemporary with its 2016 release, and the third is explicitly set in 2028 aboard an orbital station during an energy crisis. What makes the third one function as a prequel despite being set last is that its plot is the stated cause of the first film's events: an experiment in 2028 that sends things across dimensions and across time, which is how something later can be the origin of something earlier. Abrams has described the intent in exactly those terms. So there are two defensible orders and they are not the same. Release order, which is also calendar order, gives you a monster with no explanation, then a story that has almost nothing to do with it, then an explanation that arrives too late to have been set up. Cause order would put the third film first, and doing that trades away every reveal in the other two for a piece of information the first two films are deliberately built to withhold. This site lists 2008, 2016, 2028 as the story order and recommends release order for viewing, because they agree, and the note above is there so nobody rearranges them on the assumption that a prequel must come first. On what is deliberately not listed: there is no fourth film here. One has been in development since Joe Barton was hired to write in January 2021 and Babak Anvari was attached to direct in September 2022, described as a direct sequel to the 2008 film and intended for a theatrical release, but it has never been given a release date and Anvari was still calling it in development in March 2025, so putting a year on it would be inventing one. Overlord, a 2018 second world war horror film produced by Bad Robot, was widely reported for years as the next Cloverfield instalment and is not one; Abrams said so plainly on release, and it is left out rather than listed with a caveat. The tie-in material, meaning the viral marketing built around the fictional Japanese conglomerate that appears in the background of the first film, its drink brand, and the tie-in manga published around the 2008 release, is background rather than viewing and no film depends on it. One practical note on the first film: it is shot entirely as handheld footage, and if that is a problem for you it is a problem for the whole eighty-five minutes rather than an occasional sequence.
