On the data. The single most important fact on this page is that Gou is not a remake, and that the resemblance is deliberate. Ryukishi07 said so directly in a 2021 interview: it is not a remake but a completely new story set in the world of Higurashi, and the plan was to make people think it was a reboot and then surprise them. The arc names carry the joke. Gou's arcs take the original arc names and swap the second element for damashi, meaning deceiving, so Onikakushi becomes Onidamashi and Watanagashi becomes Watadamashi. Sotsu then swaps in akashi, meaning revealing, so Onidamashi is answered by Oniakashi. Gou and Sotsu are one story split across two broadcast seasons in exactly the shape of the original 2006 and Kai pair, and Ryukishi07 described them as the culmination of the Question Arcs, Kai and Rei, which is why all three come first. A second common error is the claim that the 2006 series is the questions and Kai is the answers. It is not that clean: the 2006 series covers four Question Arcs plus the Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi Answer Arcs, and Kai opens with Yakusamashi, an anime original arc added at Ryukishi07's request to restore material cut from the first season, before Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi. On the interleaved Gou and Sotsu order, this was checked against the official Kadokawa site, Japanese language order guides, English guides and the fan wikis, and every one of them lists Gou complete then Sotsu complete. There is no official interleaved order, no production statement supporting one, and no disc release configured that way. It is a fan convention and a minority one. On episode counts, three are commonly got wrong. Rei is five episodes, not three; the three figure comes from counting only the Saikoroshi arc. Sotsu is fifteen episodes across fourteen broadcast slots, because the first two aired together as an hour long premiere, which is why some trackers say fourteen. Nekogoroshi-hen is counted three different ways, as a standalone bonus, as a side story, or as episode 27 of the original series, and it was folded into the 2014 Japanese Blu-ray box as a bonus episode. Its release date is given as either 27 July or 2 August 2007, the earlier date apparently being when the mail-order disc began shipping. Kaku ~Outbreak~ is listed as a one episode OVA by Anime News Network, AniDB and the fan wikis and as a television movie by IMDb; it is treated as a special here. Story order is only partly definable and any tracker presenting Higurashi as a straight chronology is misrepresenting it. The arcs are parallel iterations of the same few days in June 1983, each ending in a reset, and two arcs are not before or after each other in any in-world sense. The only continuous thread is Rika's memory, which accumulates across iterations, and the only meaningful global ordering is the author's Question then Answer structure. Two genuine exceptions exist: Himatsubushi, inside the 2006 series, is set in 1978, five years before everything else; and Satokowashi, inside Gou, runs years past 1983 and is the causal origin of the new loops. The positions given on this page are therefore the authorial order rather than a claim about a timeline. On availability and licensing, Geneon licensed the original series in 2007 and folded partway through, Funimation finished the dub and released season one in 2009 then declined to go further in 2011, and Sentai Filmworks rescued the property in 2015 with the original series, Kai and Rei, the latter two sub only. Kira and Kaku ~Outbreak~ have never had an English licensed release. Gou and Sotsu went to Funimation and then to Crunchyroll after Sony's consolidation. A claim that Discotek acquired rights in January 2025 could not be corroborated and is not repeated here as fact. A new Higurashi television anime was announced on 21 June 2026 for the original series' twentieth anniversary, with Studio Deen returning and the original principal cast returning, under the tagline everyone, welcome back. It has no title, no staff beyond the studio, no release window and no stated relationship to Gou and Sotsu, so it is not listed rather than listed with invented details. Live action entries exist and are outside this page's scope: two films in 2008 and 2009, released in English as Shrill Cries of Summer and Shrill Cries: Reshuffle, and a 2016 television drama. On content, nothing here needed excluding. Kira is an anniversary comedy with swimsuit gags and a magical girl parody, which is mainstream and fine; unlicensed adult fan works exist for this franchise as for any large one and none of them are entries.
