His Dark Materials

Three series that adapt the whole trilogy, and one film that adapted the first book and then stopped.

Where to start with His Dark Materials

Three series in order and the trilogy is finished, which is the thing the 2007 film never managed. The one trap is that the film covers the same first book, so it is not an entry point.

  1. 1
His Dark Materials, series 1 His Dark Materials

Eight episodes adapting Northern Lights, published in America as The Golden Compass. Nothing before it, and its opening scene is quietly taken from a much later book.

  2. 2
His Dark Materials, series 2 His Dark Materials

Seven episodes rather than eight, because a standalone episode about Lord Asriel was left unfinished when the pandemic shut production down. It adapts The Subtle Knife.

  3. 3
His Dark Materials, series 3 His Dark Materials

Eight episodes finishing The Amber Spyglass, which means the whole trilogy is on screen. That is the entire reason to take this version over the film.

Then what? That is all twenty-three episodes. The Golden Compass is a separate adaptation of the same first book from 2007; scripts for its two sequels were commissioned and shelved within a year, and it shares no cast or continuity with the series. Watch it afterwards as a curiosity or not at all. No adaptation of The Book of Dust has been commissioned.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

Sync & backup

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. To carry it to another device, move the code below.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in — good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.
