On the data. Be blunt about the 1974 series: it is overwhelmingly original, and a reader coming from the books will not recognise most of it. The books supply roughly one season of usable plot and the show ran nine. Concretely: the books move across Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and Dakota Territory, while the show parks the family in Walnut Grove almost permanently, so the De Smet material that fills books five to eight is largely never adapted in its own setting. Albert, the adopted son who becomes a major character, never existed, and neither did the later adoptees James and Cassandra. Mary's blindness is real; her marriage and the blind school are invented, and the real Mary Ingalls never married. Nellie Oleson is a composite of three real girls in the books, and her extended arc on screen is original. Farmer Boy is essentially unadapted. Season nine has almost no book basis at all. And the townspeople blowing up Walnut Grove in The Last Farewell is pure invention with no counterpart anywhere in Wilder. A fair summary is that the pilot and a modest run of early episodes track book chapters directly, and from roughly season three onward the series is original drama using Wilder's characters and setting. No percentage is given here because no sourced count exists and any specific figure circulating online should be treated as invented. Season nine was genuinely retitled: after Michael Landon left as a regular, the 1982 to 1983 run aired as Little House: A New Beginning, with the Ingalls parents gone and the focus on Laura, Almanzo and a new family. Every home video release still counts it as season nine, so it is listed that way here with the retitle noted. On episode counts, this page uses 200 as broadcast, and the count is flagged because you will also see 204 and occasionally 203. The 204 figure has an identifiable cause: four episodes originally aired as single two hour broadcasts and are split into two parts on disc and in syndication, namely The Lord Is My Shepherd, Gold Country, May We Make Them Proud and Home Again, and 200 plus 4 reconciles exactly. The 203 figure appears only in aggregator summary lines whose own per season tables still sum to 200. The two independent sources checked agree season by season on 200. The Netflix series is out: ordered in January 2025, filmed in Winnipeg from June to October 2025, and premiered on 9 July 2026 with all eight episodes at once, developed by Rebecca Sonnenshine with Trip Friendly, son of the original producer, among the executive producers. It was renewed for a second season on 3 March 2026, before the first had even premiered, and that second season has no announced date or episode count, which is why it is listed with the count not yet announced rather than guessed. Its cast includes named Indigenous characters played by Indigenous actors and the real Black physician Dr George Tann, who treated the Ingalls family in Kansas and appears only fleetingly in the novel, which signals that this version engages directly with the books' treatment of Native peoples. That is the main reason a reader might choose it over the 1974 one. Two smaller corrections. There is no 2000s Japanese anime; the anime is from 1975 and 1976, twenty six episodes on TBS, adapting the first two books, and it is obscure in English speaking markets. And one widely plausible sounding casting claim about the Netflix series that surfaced during research could not be found in the source when checked directly, so no cast beyond the confirmed list is repeated here. The four spin-off series about other generations of the family, the Rose Years, Caroline Years, Martha Years and Charlotte Years, run to 23 books by other authors and are deliberately not listed: they would nearly quadruple the count without adding any Wilder prose, most are out of print, and two of the four were discontinued before their planned endings, which would leave a completionist looking at arcs that can never be finished.
