Men in Black

On the data. Four films and fifty-three episodes of animation. The films are unusual for this site in that release order, story order and recommended order are the same three lists: 1997, 2002, 2012, 2019, one after the other. Two things complicate that and neither changes the order. First, most of Men in Black 3 takes place in 1969 after its lead travels back, but the film opens and closes in the present and the 1969 section only means anything once you have seen the present-day setup, so there is no chronological cut of the trilogy to be had. Second, Men in Black: International is a spin-off rather than a sequel: it has none of the returning leads, it is set in the London office, and its only real link to the earlier films is Emma Thompson returning as Agent O from the third film, plus a cameo from Frank the Pug. It is in continuity, and it is also the lowest grossing entry at around 253 million dollars worldwide and the worst reviewed, which is why it is listed in the main run but flagged as a spin-off rather than quietly dropped or quietly promoted. Men in Black: The Series ran on Kids' WB from 11 October 1997 to 30 June 2001, fifty-three episodes across four seasons of thirteen, thirteen, fourteen and thirteen. It is set after the first film but is explicitly an alternate version of what followed it: Agent K never retires, Agent J is still treated as a rookie, Agent L is senior staff rather than a new recruit, and headquarters sits under LaGuardia Airport rather than at the address used in the film. That is not a small drift, because Men in Black II opens with K retired and his memory wiped, which the series never allows to happen. So the cartoon is listed here as part of the same property with no position on the film timeline, rather than being slotted in between the first two films where it would contradict them. The films come from a comic, The Men in Black by Lowell Cunningham, first published by Aircel in 1990 and later collected by Malibu, which Marvel then acquired. Two things sometimes listed as part of this franchise are not: the long-rumoured crossover with 21 Jump Street was in development from 2014, had a director attached in 2016, and was reported as dead by January 2019, and it was never made. In December 2025 Sony confirmed a new Men in Black film in development with Chris Bremner writing; there is no release date, no confirmed cast and no title, so it is not listed here.
