Puppet Master

Toulon shoots himself in 1939 in the first film, then turns up alive in Berlin in 1941 and in Switzerland in 1944 in two later ones, and nobody has ever reconciled it.

Where to start with Puppet Master

Watch these in the order they came out. The story order on this page is real, and it is unwatchable: it opens on a 1902 origin story that was made tenth, then jumps to 1939, then to 1941, then forward fifty years, and it gives away the ending of the first film before you have seen it.

  1. 1
    Puppet Master Puppet Master

The 1989 original. Its prologue establishes Toulon, his suicide in 1939 and the puppets, and every later film is either a sequel to it or a prequel arguing with it.

  2. 2
Puppet Master II Puppet Master II

Follows on immediately and gives its own account of where the animating formula came from, which a later film in this list flatly contradicts.

  3. 3
Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge

The prequel most people rate highest, and the point where the timeline breaks: Toulon is alive in Berlin in 1941, two years after the first film says he died.

  4. 4
Puppet Master 4 Puppet Master 4

Back to the present day and to a new set of characters. It is the first half of a story rather than a standalone film.

  5. 5
Puppet Master 5: The Final Chapter Puppet Master 5: The Final Chapter

The second half of film four, shot back to back with it. Watching one without the other leaves you with half a plot.

Then what? After that the run gets thin. Curse of the Puppet Master, Retro Puppet Master and Puppet Master: The Legacy are for completists, and The Legacy in particular is largely recycled footage. Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys is a crossover made for television and is generally treated as outside the series. The Axis trilogy, Axis of Evil, Axis Rising and Axis Termination, is a self-contained war story that you can watch as a block whenever you like, with Blade: The Iron Cross and Doktor Death hanging off it. Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich is a full restart with different puppets and different rules, so it is a place to start rather than a place to finish.

A suggested way in, not an official one. The full list is below — tick anything off in either place.

Your progress is saved on this device automatically. To carry it to another device, move the code below.

The code holds only this franchise. The link opens the tracker with your progress already filled in — good for showing someone where you're at. The image is a picture you can keep anywhere: scan the code on it with a phone, or drag the file back in below.

Drag a SagaList image here, or .

This reads the progress stored inside the picture, so nothing has to be retyped. If the image has been through a messaging app it may have been re-encoded and lost that — scan the code on it instead, or copy the code printed along the bottom.

Restoring replaces the progress currently saved on this device for the franchise the code belongs to.

Read only. This never changes what you have saved, and nothing leaves your browser. The code has to be their code for this same franchise: codes do not carry a name, so one from somewhere else may not be recognised as wrong.
