Silent Hill

On the data. Two accuracy traps sit on this franchise and most write-ups fall into both. The first is crediting Christophe Gans with Revelation. He directed the 2006 film and the 2026 film; M. J. Bassett, credited at the time as Michael J. Bassett, wrote and directed the 2012 one. Gans was initially attached to the sequel and left, saying his vision did not match the producers' and that after the success of the first film they wanted a follow-up to the film rather than to the games, and he did not agree with where they wanted to go. The second trap is presenting the three films as a trilogy. They are a duology plus a reboot. Revelation is a direct sequel to the 2006 film, with Sharon Da Silva grown into Heather Mason and three of the original cast returning. Return to Silent Hill shares no characters, no cast and no plot threads with either; it adapts Silent Hill 2, an entirely separate story from the Alessa Gillespie material the first two films are built on. Marking it as part three would be wrong on continuity even though it is third by release. On release status, which is the highest-risk fact on this page: Konami announced Return to Silent Hill at its Silent Hill Transmission showcase on 19 October 2022. Principal photography ran from April 2023 to February 2024 under the working title Room 318, shooting in Belgrade and in Germany on a budget of roughly 23 million dollars, with a rough cut and the first look at Pyramid Head screened at Cannes in May 2024. It then sat unreleased for about a year and a half with no date attached, which is the real slippage. In June 2025 Cineverse, with Iconic Events Releasing, dated it for 23 January 2026, and it opened on that date as scheduled. It took roughly 3.2 million dollars in its opening weekend in the United States, the lowest opening in the franchise and around 84 percent below the 2006 film, against roughly 16 million internationally including about 9.3 million in China, where it opened at number one. Final worldwide gross was approximately 47.8 million. Digital release followed on 24 February 2026 and disc on 17 March 2026. Akira Yamaoka, the composer of the games, scored it. On what comes next: Gans told Variety around release that he would like to adapt another chapter and named Silent Hill 4: The Room as the game he would most want. That is director interest only. Konami has announced no further film, and a fourth film is deliberately not listed here rather than listed as to be announced. The 2022 showcase announced exactly one film, not a slate. Silent Hill: Ascension is the only other genuine screen adaptation and it is an odd one: a CGI interactive streaming series from Genvid Entertainment with Bad Robot Games and Behaviour Interactive, released daily from 31 October 2023 to 24 April 2024 with the audience voting in real time on where the story went. It won a 2024 Emmy for outstanding innovation in emerging media programming. Because it was a live service with a voted, branching structure rather than a fixed episode list, its episode count is left unset here rather than guessed. Its service has ended. No official Silent Hill short film, animated feature or live action television series exists. Fan films exist and none are licensed.
